Education has always been the prime focus of L&T’s CSR efforts and several educational programmes are being implemented,working closely with government schools covering various aspects including school infrastructure development, setting up smart classes, providing STEM education and running robust teacher training initiatives.
The 'Every Child A Scientist' (ECAS)' initiative, being executed in association with the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) and funded by L&T, gives children an opportunity to understand science and technology to inculcate a scientific temper. The programme is targeted initially at 300 economically underprivileged children from 6th to 9th standards studying in select Corporation schools in Chennai following the Tamil Nadu State board syllabus. They are exposed to themes such as biodiversity conservation, climate change, nutrition and more, through practical video sessions and classroom study. They even learn to dissect a frog, use stethoscopes & microscopes, and check BP through a sphygmomanometer.
The Ramapuram Govt Hr Sec School in Chennai was renovated and given a much-needed makeover thanks to L&T CSR's support. Leaking roofs were fixed with weather course treatment, the walls plastered and today the school stands tall with a fresh look, much to the delight of around 450 students. “We were losing students because of the condition of the school but now I'm confident of more enrolments,” thanked the School Headmistress. The educational department, the Parent Teacher Association, and the school administration too have expressed their gratitude for L&T's support.
We support Sri Arunodayam to transform lives of specially challenged children with special education, rehabilitation therapies and a host of enabling aspects like nutrition, community support, specially trained teachers, assistive technology, and access to healthcare. The specially customized education programme focuses on five skills - three academic and two on activities of daily life such as dressing, and grooming - to help the children to be a part of the social mainstream.
